Centre Wellington
The Grand River is navigable in spring from Belwood Lake to West Montrose for experienced paddlers. Consult the GRCA Website for river flow and safety information. South of Elora, the river cuts through the Elora Gorge, a spectacular limestone canyon. The Elora Gorge Conservation Area has trails along the gorge and a campsite. If you are really adventurous, the GRCA provides tubing trips through the gorge. Elora Raft Rides offers guided rafting trips in the gorge, as well as punting trips on the river and “riverbug games”. The Elora Paddle Company rents canoes in Elora. If you want to learn to rappel or ice climb, One Axe Pursuits provides individual instruction as well as corporate team building activities.
Elora and Fergus are the main centres in the township of Centre Wellington, built in the 19th century of local limestone. Both communities are renowned for their emphasis on arts and culture. For more information on Elora and Fergus visit Elora and Fergus Tourism on Mill St, Elora.
Fergus
The town of Fergus is famous for celebrating its Scottish heritage at the annual summer Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. Enjoy live music and dancing as well as traditional sports, such as tossing the caber. At other times of the year, visit the Templin Gardens, overlooking the Grand River, and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants along the main street. In the evening, take in a show at the historic Fergus Grand Theatre.
Elora
Elora grew up around the Elora Grist Mill, which has been converted into the upscale Elora Mill Hotel and Spa. There are 2 annual music festivals in Elora: the Elora Festival in July, which is an international choral festival staged in local churches, barns and other venues; and Riverfest Elora, a 3 day outdoor music festival in August.
Elora is also a popular day trip year round to visit the boutique shops that sell local arts and crafts as well as the many restaurants in the area of Mill St and Metcalfe St.
