The Grand River courses through Waterloo Region, broadening and gathering strength as it traverses the rural township of Woolwich, skirting the eastern edges of Kitchener and Waterloo, and passing through the historic center of Galt, now part of Cambridge. Accessible to paddlers with numerous entry points, safety guidance is available via the GRCA. Several outfitters offer guided and self-guided trips, with opportunities for novice paddlers to learn through courses.
Trails along the Grand River are easily accessible via public transit in Waterloo Region, with Grand River Transit providing bike-friendly buses and the option to bring bikes on the trains. The Grand Trail follows the Trans Canada Trail route through West Montrose, Elmira, St Jacobs, and the three cities of Waterloo Region, offering ample opportunities for exploration and overnight stays in comfortable accommodations. A side loop of the Grand Trail passes through Hespeler, in Cambridge and the Royal City of Guelph. Additionally, visitors can explore tributaries like the Speed River and Nith River. When your hike, bike or paddle adventure are done, there are numerous cultural attractions and festivals to satisfy all ages and interests.
