Waterloo’s GeoTime Trail

Start: Park at the parking lot off Sundew Dr in Waterloo
Go back in time to the age of the dinosaurs and even earlier on the City of Waterloo’s GeoTime Trail. Walk through a beautiful forest at the top of the Waterloo moraine. The trail is 4.567 km long corresponding to the estimated 4.567 billion year age of the earth. Every metre you walk is equal to 1 million years of geological history.
The trail is steep in places and is not suitable for bikes or mobility devices.
This unique hike was developed by Dr. Alan V. Morgan, Professor Emeritus, Quaternary Geology and Paleontology, University of Waterloo, in cooperation with the City of Waterloo.
Park your vehicle in the parking lot off Sundew Dr in Waterloo. Walk about 200 m to the start of the trail and turn R towards the forest. Every metre you walk is equivalent to 1 million years of geological history. There are signs at intervals explaining what was happening on earth at the corresponding time. This trail is perfect for students of all ages who are interested in geology and evolution.
